Let’s dive on in! Here are our top tips + tricks on how to find the best angles and pose so that you are sure to nail your photo shoots every. single. time.
Tip #1: Always find your light.
- You want to find your light source and turn towards it to avoid any harsh shadows on your face.
- If you don’t wish to turn towards the light, try shooting with the light directly behind you to create backlighting.
Tip #2: Leave enough negative space around yourself.
- Try not to cut off the top of your head in the photo.
- Make sure you are framing yourself correctly, it’s always better to have more space in the photo and you can crop it out later!
Tip #3: You can frame the photo inside of the Instagram app itself when you go to upload the image.
- Back in the day, Instagram only allowed it’s users to post square images.
- But what a time to be alive… today we can crop and adjust the photos we upload within the app itself!
Tip #4: Don’t photograph yourself from straight on. Try to lean.
- Looking straight on into the camera can come across pretty awkward.
- Leaning makes it feel more natural + will make you look more inviting.
- This will help your engagement because your audience wants to connect to people, not necessarily a business.
Tip #5: Shift your weight. Create movement.
- Things you can do to create movement:
- Bend your knee
- Shift weight into your hip
- Take a fake step
- Lean on something
- Look down + look back up (to refresh your face, sis)
Tip #6: Breathing is a powerful tool.
- When you exhale, it allows your whole body to relax and the photo to look more natural.
- Praise recommends starting each photography session with 3 deep breaths.
Tip #7: Use those hands!
- Place your hand on your chin or play with your hair!
- Just play with your hands. It might feel weird but it will translate really wonderfully on camera.
- Fun challenge: pretend like you are sprinkling salt while you’re taking photos.
- This might feel silly, but we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when viewing your new shots!
Tip #8: Remember your posture.
- This one is simple, but we all need a reminder on it every now and again.
- Good posture helps you be aligned and look more confident in photos!
Tip #9: Think about the emotion you want the photo to portray.
- If this shoot is for a business, think about how powerful + determined you are to reach your goal.
- Do the core work of showing up for yourself + showing up for others fully as you are.
Tip #10: Utilize selfie stick/tripod/apple watch.
- This is a great way to take a full body shot of yourself.
- Using these tools is also great if you need to snap of yourself holding something.
Tip #11: Turn on the live setting on your iPhone’s camera before you shoot.
- Doing this gives us far more options!
- This is great for those movement shots that we chatted about above! You can pick which frame from that live photo is the most flattering.
- Another great thing about live photos is that you can convert them to a video file.
Tip #12: Keep your chin up and head held high.
- This is a just a great life tip in general.
- Look up and over certain objects instead of right at them. This will help keep your head lifted in photos.
