PRAISE: alright perfect well hello happy Friday everybody I just did my first Instagram live yesterday so I’m playing (break) oh and now we’re back okay I’m here with my friend Mira she runs a website called lipstick and politics which is for us contemporary women to keep us more engaged – but can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit more about that?
MIRA: I’m the founder of a website called lipstick and politics and what we do is create female-focused content all around just informing women and representing women and amplifying their voice so we do a lot of online content and a lot of offline as well so we host events in San Francisco
PRAISE: awesome why I looked up to Mira a lot because she’s someone who seems to have it together and so I was talking with her about a few different topics that we can talk about today and so we’re gonna cover three ways to thrive in your day and she was telling me a few great things over tea so what is tip number one and how would you thrive?
MIRA: one of the things that I do every single morning is I set aside 30 minutes in the morning and I try to basically make a list of my priorities or what I think is super important for me to accomplish that day and I try to focus on one or two things that I really really need to get done and make a list of the other things that I can pretty much pass on to the following day or pass on to the future or if I can’t really excited that I can get it all done but I try not to make any more than five so it has to be maybe between two and five and that is just before I open my laptop before I do anything before my son wakes up this has to be done and I usually sit down with a cup of coffee you know my notebook and it’s like that’s what I do
PRAISE: so you’re actually like physically writing out
MIRA: a note on your notebook and then when do you check it off throughout your day at the end of the day I took it out by the end of the day because then I kind of already mentally noted like what I’ve gotten done and so it feels really good when you’re able to go cross cross cross cross cross I think it’s just like oh I did so much today you know it feels really good but yeah I mean the whole physical aspect of it like having a pen and paper and just putting it down and just sitting with a cup of coffee it becomes kind of a ritual it’s something I need to do every morning it makes me feel good it makes me feel like I’m starting the day with a plan yeah yeah where the plan is like the way to go
PRAISE: yeah for sure I have a friend who makes a to-do list and at the top of her to-do list she writes, make a to-do list, immediately has like so check off yeah I an early win okay that’s awesome so step one is a really solid morning routine. This second point that you’re gonna talk about and I was trying to like frame it around like politics but she put in a much better way so what is your second thing about thriving?
MIRA: it’s really just making sure what you put in your brain is good um so you’re not just you know looking through garbage whether it’s on your phone or out in the world are on your laptop you’re just kind of trying to find good information so politically that means not always listening to the sensationalized overdramatic news content that you’re going to you know be influenced whether it’s good or bad you’re you’re really trying to focus on how do you shift who you are and how do you make yourself a better person so I’m always looking for information that is going to teach me something or going to like push me to become a better person or a better leader and I often use this you know app and also it sits in your it can sit in your browser it’s called pocket I make it
PRAISE: write that down pocket
MIRA: we’re just we’re just uh you know tell you a good feature a great feature of this particular content storage I don’t know I guess add-on to your browser is that you can save articles or save anything that you might want to read like PDF or anything as interest to you you can kind of read it later like and refer back to it or you can kind of like archive it or you can always find it that’s good because sometimes I stumble across a great article but I’m like right about to meet with someone and I’m like I know that would be good for me later so it sounds like pocket is a way to be like here’s the way to feed your brain when you have a time yeah yeah yeah and that way you don’t have to keep scrolling on Instagram or somewhere else that you know you’re just kind of like okay I’ve got five minutes to kill and the other thing is you know try not to like have your phone all the time try to take those five minutes and actually look around you and kind of make yourself feel better right and I think reading physical books or reading that are you know physical manuals or about life or whether they’re like whatever it is newspapers I don’t know it just feels better yeah feels better yeah I like that there’s something I think honestly like our eyes are a muscle that we overuse especially when it comes to screen so something practical is really good yeah yeah that tactile that kind of like yeah feeling it in your hands yeah it’s really great great
PRAISE: okay so morning routine is super important yeah second is be careful what you put in your brain and make sure it’s like good nourishment yes and so what is our third thing to thrive in your day?
MIRA: a relationship relationship relationship is like how do you do things to nurture your relationships like what it whether it’s at home or in the world or work or with your friends like what are you doing or if you’re looking to start a business like are you actually creating relationships with people that will help you achieve your goals or make you happier in life like what is it so for me I really try to spend actual real time with people and really talk to them and have drinks with them it’s that like you know I try to make that a real priority you know and just I think there’s this great book just called “Never Eat Alone” yeah just doing that like not eating lunch alone and just really focusing on you know how do you create time for relationships and you’re super busy like you have to have lunch right I’ll invite you in alone for all right yeah yeah that’s nice way to catch up yeah I like it cuz that’s like not only work but just like your personal life
PRAISE: I know for me like if my community my friendship community isn’t doing well like I’m not inspired to do my work then what’s the point?
MIRA: yeah right yes that goes a long way that I think is what we call work-life balance
PRAISE: yeah I heard of that before
MIRA: whatever that is…sounds very infamous you know get to be there yeah yeah okay
PRAISE: thank you that’s great so those are really practical tips 1) morning routine 2) be careful what you read and then 3) relationships relationships relationships yeah oh I’m glad you guys like these tips oh this is so super fun okay well now we’re gonna do Mira’s photos she looks gonna be one okay so stay tuned for that. Bye everybody
