I thank God that my friend Luis is alive.
He was at Pulse on the morning of June 12.
He survived.

I texted him once I got word of the news here in California.
We FaceTimed.
We cried.
He hadn’t slept.
He showed me the blood of the victims that were still on his clothes.

Luis is a treasure.
We met on set for a commercial and formed a bond like no other.
Our #krakenkrew. We are actors, performers. Family.
We are Leo & Kate.

He’s charming, an extrovert.
One of my choice travel companions.
We have dealt with each other’s crankiness.
I gave him so many eye rolls while we were in Greece together.
He talked too much for my introverted self.
But it’s a gift.
I’m not surprised all the news stations wanted to interview him.
But he deserves rest, healing.

He has loved me so well when my heart has been hurt.
He can read my emotions from 3,000 miles away through an emoji or even a lack of it. I just want to be home to hug him.

It is a privilege to be his friend, to see the person God is forming him to be.
I know this moment will change his life. Forever.
I don’t want him to be famous for this.
He will be famous for his talent, when he wins his Oscar.

I have the privilege of typing this PDA for my brother who is alive and can read this.
But the loved ones of the growing list of identified victims…their love notes will be part of a eulogy. This breaks me.

I have hope. I know God is in the work of redemption.
But I am grieving with my hometown.
We are in sorrow.

Treasure the good.
