How to Find the Right Business Coach (And What to Ask)
After 10+ years in business (and one whole year podcasting!), I’ve learned firsthand how much growth happens when you have the right support. If you’re wondering how to find a business coach who gets you and can actually help move the needle—this post is for you. I’m sharing my story, plus the exact questions to ask so you don’t waste time (or money) on the wrong fit.
When I first dipped my toes into the coaching world, I used an app that connected me to a coach. She was kind, but let’s just say… her approach leaned more “vague and vibes” than “practical systems.” And while I love a good woo-woo moment (you know this!), what I needed then was grounded support and actual tools.
Eventually, I found my dream coach. She was a photographer turned educator with multiple income streams—basically living the business future I wanted. I could see her values in action. And that’s when it clicked: the right coach should embody the kind of business and life you want to build.
Trust and connection are everything. You need someone you can be real with, not someone you feel like you have to impress.
Questions to ask:
What’s your coaching style and communication approach?
How do you adapt your style to different learning types or personalities?
What inspires you to coach entrepreneurs?
Your dream coach should have receipts. Whether it’s in your exact industry or not, they should have a track record of helping people with similar goals.
Questions to ask:
What’s your background and experience in [your field]?
Have you helped clients with challenges like mine?
Can you share client success stories or testimonials?
How do you stay current in your industry?
A good coach is both cheerleader and challenger. They should care deeply about your growth—but also have the guts to call you on your self-sabotage.
Questions to ask:
Can you share a time you helped a client overcome a big obstacle?
How do you support clients struggling with confidence or mindset?
Are you comfortable giving tough feedback when needed?
The best coaches teach you to lead yourself. You shouldn’t be dependent on them forever.
Questions to ask:
Can you tell me how your clients are doing now, after working with you?
How do you empower clients to make decisions without you?
Do you provide frameworks, tools, or step-by-step systems?
It’s not enough for a coach to have good ideas—they need to be able to communicate them clearly and give you tools to apply what they teach.
Questions to ask:
Can you share how you’ve helped clients apply complex strategies in a simple way?
Can I talk to past clients or read more testimonials?
I put all these questions into a handy PDF cheat sheet—you’ll find the link in the show notes. Use it for any coach you’re interviewing (yep, even if that coach is me!). I love coaching leaders and creatives who want to build sustainable, profitable, and joy-filled brands.
And if I’m not the right fit? I’ve got a whole community of amazing coaches I’d be honored to refer you to.
Because at the end of the day, the world needs your voice, your vision, and your brand. You deserve support that feels aligned and empowering.
