A COMEPLUM CHAT WITH BRITTENY (aka YOGA BAE)
Before we dive right into how to create your own ratchet affirmations, Britteny is going to break down some terms and definitions that we need to understand first so that we can understand how to successfully slip ratchet affirmations into our own DMs in a way that will be productive for us all.
Understanding the Script:
- Scripts are situations that you’ve been in that are re-occurring.
- Here are some examples of scripts many women face on a daily basis:
- “You’re a woman so you could never be the CEO.”
- “You are a Person of Color so you cannot…”
- “You are a single mom so you cannot…”
The Basic Affirmation:
- Simply put, affirmations are the words used to help you doubt your doubts.
- We can use affirmations to rewrite those negative scripts IF we are willing to do the work.
“An affirmation is simply the words to help you doubt your doubts.”
The Ratchet Affirmation:
- These are types of affirmations that are more inclined to resonate with the modern-day millennials, the revolutionary inside of us.
- Therefore, taking that sage advice of the affirmations we just talked about above, but it is said in a way that sounds like your favorite rap lyrics.
For example:
-
- The main idea: Boundaries are important
- Basic Affirmation: “I respect my boundaries.”
- Ratchet Affirmation: “My goal in life is to be there for everyone else, but never leave my mother-fuckin’ self behind.”
- People are more likely to be able to get on board with things that they can relate to and that speaks to them.
For example:
-
- A Black, Woman of Color may not be able to relax and be able to be fully engaged in a meditation if they feel that the individual leading the meditation is not at all relatable and doesn’t sound like her.
- This was the catalyst of Britteny’s journey to being writing affirmations for herself. She began recording meditations for herself. She realized that she could use her voice to help empower other women.
Repetition is Key:
- The more someone can adapt an idea, the more likely it is to stick.
- Repetition = Retention
- When you first say affirmations to yourself, you might not believe it. But keep going, sis! The more you say it, the more you allow it to take root in your mind and the more you being to embody it.
- It is important to do this because our words are powerful and the more we believe these affirmations, the more we re-write those original scripts.
Now that we’ve got a better understanding of the ingredients to a successful ratchet affirmation recipe…
How do we create our own ratchet affirmations?
Step 1: Observe yourself & realize the script.
- Notice when you become tense, uneasy, begin to hold your breath, etc. because you’re uncomfortable.
- Find the areas of your life that automatically goes dark or becomes negative.
- Then you can recognize the thought/script.
For example:
Step 2: Rewrite that thought from a place of gratitude.
- Say to yourself out loud the opposite of that thought that you are believing.
- In order to do this, it is helpful to start from a place of gratitude.
For example:
-
- “Thank you, body, for getting these pants on, regardless!”
Step 3: Do the work and change what you are able to.
- There are two options when you don’t like something:
- You can fix that shit.
- You can own that shit.
Example of how you can fix that shit:
-
-
- “I’m going to take my ass to the gym so that I can build the body that I desire.”
Example of how you can own that shit:
-
- “I love these stretch marks. I love my thick thighs. I love my cellulite and I’m going to work on that.”
“You can be upset for just long enough for you to figure out that you have a problem and then you need to affirm yourself and then you need to make a decision: own it or fix it.”
